Text Box: How is the Market? This is the best time in recent years to be a buyer. Inventory is still healthy, but beginning to drop as buyers are no longer waiting to time the market. Mortgage rates are still historically low, inventory is healthy, and most sellers are setting reasonable prices based on this market rather than the unusual spiking prices of the last five years. For Sale By Owner—Can I sell my house myself?

Only 7% of homes sold in Massachusetts last year were listed as For Sale By Owner or FSBO. A recent study of last year’s home sales all over the country found that in 2006, the number of homes listed for sale by owner was the lowest in 25 years. The homes that were sold without the help of a REALTOR® sold for an average of 31.9% less than those sold with the help of a professional. The study found that local buyers who shopped for a home online were more likely to use an agent to purchase their home than buyers who did not use the Internet during their home search.
